Gospel according to Dorian Wood this Saturday

Images Text by Brendan Seibel image demolisten

Electoclash Eurotrash and disco revivalists better get out of town this weekend. The gospel according to true believer Dorian Wood is descending upon this city and heretics cannot hide behind their forked tongues. "I am confident that anyone who breathes", he states, "will fully be enraptured by the virtual exorcism I have in store, regardless of the lyrics" (which are in English and Bulgarian).

Lording over the keys, the living ghost of deep delta bluesmen, Wood's rapturous songs marry the fevered spirituality of Southern gospel to the virtuosity of golden era Tin Pan Alley composers. Stories swirling in apocalyptic imagery waltz through the looking glass, confronting Alice's hallucinatory wonderland. It's the blood and gore of Brothers Grimm undercut with Bertolt Brecht's savage social criticisms, tightly wound and careening around the corners without losing control.

If Wood's classically trained fingers fail to impress his sonorous exertions shall surely prevail. Boasting an expansive range it is his absolute emotional commitment and devotion to the unfolding tales that slit the throats of empty-eyed pop vocalists. A theatrical performer, who shares time with Los Angeles's musical collective Killsonic, Wood understands when to tone it down, reel the vocals back to earth, and confess.

Typically accompanied by a bombastic assortment of nouveau-Balkan horns and marching band percussion, Wood's first Parisian excursion will test his mettle performing solo. He's charged and ready to impress, "feeling surprisingly energized and ready to wail out the sea of demons I smuggled in through customs." Saturday night's concert will offer an assortment of cuts from his two previous releases,

Black Pig Suite and BOLKA, as well as songs destined for his upcoming album Rattle Rattle. Opening duo Frac + Bye Bye will be accompanying him for a couple numbers.
