CAMAC, Marnay Art Center Residency Program

The artist in residence program at CAMAC aims to bring together artists in mid or advanced career stages from all countries and all disciplines (writing, painting, sculpture, architecture, design, multimedia and video art, new technologies, installation art, music, dance, etc.) for a concentrated period of one to six months.

This program aims to support residents in their creative explorations, investigations, and personal growth in an environment of communication and exchange. With its location in Marnay-sur-Seine, participants can benefit from the French countryside without being cut off from the cosmopolitan richness of Paris.

Quartier d'été & Black Summer Festival

The Quartier d'été festival is a showcase of dance, music and outdoor performance in various parks, gardens and squares across Paris.

The festival has an enormous variety of acts across a variety of locations. Each year is developed to offer an original experience, trying to create a journey of discovery in the prestigious and unexpected places around the capital.

From the likes of Pierre Henry, the French electronic composer, to Cirque à la Cité (pole, acrobatics, clowns, diabolo, trapeze and more…) the program is packed full of cultural gems for the inquisitive and curious. 

The Cabaret Sauvage’s Black Summer festival finishes on August 3rd with what is set to be a fantastic finale: George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic and Anthony Joseph & the Spasm Band. The festival pays tribute to the black roots of hip-hop, jazz, afro beat and salsa.

Fitzcarraldo at La Villette

Join VINGT paris on a warm summer's evening this August for the finale of this year's 'Cinéma en plein air' (free outdoor cinema).

From 15 July till 16 August, 27 films will be projected on a giant screen in the grass triangle, at Parc de la Villette, Paris' largest park located in the 19th arrondissement.

This summer the films include numerous adventure classics such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Into the Wild and Forbidden Planet. Films are shown in their original versions with French subtitles. 

We've chosen the 1982 film Fitzcarraldo, written and directed by Werner Herzog, starring Klaus Kinski as the title character - derived from a real-life story of Peruvian rubber baron Carlos Fitzcarrald. The film portrays the baron, an Irishman called Fitzcarraldo in Peru, who has to pull a steamship over a steep hill in order to access a rich rubber territory.

Anne-Marie Pereira of the Centre Pompidou sums up Elles as “unique because unlike other exhibitions there is no curatorial point, no over-arching  theme. It is quite simply a selection of the works by women in the collection.  With only 8,000 meters of show space, they could never show its full collection.”

Filling two floors and many rooms the exhibition avoids cacophony and confusion by dividing the works into groups with brightly colored text and themes such as "Free Fire" and "Eccentric Abstraction".

The idea sounds simple but the result is a multi-layered and complex exhibition. The work spans all media – paintings, performance, video, design, architecture, and costume with 500 works in all by more than 200 artists. Among them are Agnes Martin, Nan Goldin, Frida Kahlo, The Guerilla Girls, Jenny Holzer, Louise Bourgeois and the show’s cover girl Pipilotti Rist. Even to those of us who frequent art museums there are bound to be some revelations, in my case Kristen Baker, Andrea Fraser, and Ruth Barabash.

Animal Collective at La Cigale

With no air conditioning at historic venue La Cigale, the hot summer evening gave the venue a muggy feel which lent to the air of anticipation. The cramped excitement you sometimes get at special gigs was due to the rare chance to see the reclusive Animal Collective, whose new album has received slightly intimidating worldwide acclaim.

However there wasn't a hint of arrogance or even showmanship from the three Baltimore musicians, who each have successful solo careers but come together under the tag 'collective'.

Together they attracted a faithful following wearing  furry masks, ensuring their pointy ears were silhouetted against the stage's impressive lighting effects.

The opening of the concept store MERCI by Marie France and Bernard Cohen, founders of the childrenswear couture house Bonpoint has caused a minor Parisian sensation.

At first glance the store could be mistaken for an Urban Outfitters with its eclectic mix of color and clothing . This 1000m2 loft comprises a literary café, a florist, a combination of furniture and clothing - both new and rare vintage finds - at a variety of prices - disguised in a sleek layout. But more than a trendy shop with some serious "bobo" attitude, all proceeds are donated to charities.

A place where you can lose yourself between retro chic and futuristic designs. You can also find labels such as Paul Smith, Stella McCartney, APC and some vintage Yves St Laurent at 3 euros a pop.

VINGT Featured in the Guardian's 'Been There' Travel Section: Aix-en-Provence, the Best Croissants in France

“Sous Les Tilleuls” offers a beautifully located base. The large suite available to rent on the 1st floor has a magnificent view on the colourful houses opposite and a gorgeous garden, featuring the famous lime trees of the name.

Owner Marie-Christine Ducros prepares a perfectly laid breakfast table with plentiful patisserie and pretty local tableware as well as supplying tips of what to do in the city.

She is a proud hostess (chambres d'hôtes are the rough equivalent of a British B&B - with a French flair of course) - her home and garden are comfortable and scrupulously clean. The 1st floor apartment could sleep 2 couples or a medium sized family. A relaxing salon-cum-bedroom space doubles as a playroom or TV room for evenings leaving the tranquil master bedroom overlooking a Provençal garden. The rooms are connected by a huge bathroom with a great jacuzzi bubble bath, tons of space and plentiful towel action.

Spy Numbers at Palais de Tokyo

Teaming daring curation with credible artwork, Palais de Tokyo enthusiastically offers guidance to artists and audiences towards the future of contemporary art. The gallery’s current sententious exhibition is Spy Numbers.

Before even entering into the physical gallery space hollow rumbling sounds emanate from Pascal Broccolichi’s Sonotubes. Deeper in the exhibition Ken Gonzales-Day’s image 'The Wonder Gaze' sweeps round a corner, in eloquent conversation with a rhombohedron sculpture by Tony Smith and archival photographs by Arthur Mole and John Thomas.

The gallery has a slick but industrial environment, a more distinct identity than the mausoleums of many international art spaces. A sense of vitality runs throughout the whole space. Recently written up in Le Monde as a space for France’s young artists, Palais de Tokyo offers far more support to neophyte practitioners than other established spaces in Paris.
