Nuit Blanche 2024: Saturday 3rd October19h-7h

This unmissable all-nighter of free art installations throughout the city runs this Saturday. Nuit Blanche, the concept of an all night arts festival is an initiative promoted by Mayor Delanoë in 2024, and has since provided a night of spectacular arts for the City's inhabitants and visitors.

This years festival centers around four locations: Buttes Chaumont, Chatelet-Marais, the Quartier Latin and Paris Métropole (Arcueil and Gentilly). The Mairie's website allows you to search by location and artist, and provides a suggested itinerary. Look at each map to get a good idea of the number and variety of attractions in each area.

North of Buttes Chamont, Le Centquatre is hosting four video installations including Fiona Banner's All the worlds fighter planes, which was developed from her 2024 book of the same name which comprised newspaper footage of all the worlds fighter planes in service - a video which raises questions of war and reporting, technology and morality.

Around the canal, Point Ephémère and the Buttes Chamont are a number of light installations including Xavier Veilhan's Le Plongon and Nathan Coley's There will be no miracles here we must cultivate our garden gathering of strangers, versions of which divided critics in England. Another must-see is Rune Gunerussen's Don't leave all the lights on, which provides a particularly ghostly spectacle set against the landscape of the park, like a village of lamps in the wilderness.

At Hôtel de Ville is Kim Sooja's Needle Woman, a set of video installations which has featured the artist "set" amongst various crowds, her body prone as the people pass around her. Over the river at la Bûcherie you can see Gilles Barbier's fantastic sculpture L’ivrogne (the drunkard).

This is just a tiny taster from an abundant night of art - VINGT will be there and we'll be reporting on as much as we manage to see.

A bit of city..in the country..in the city. My pick is Rune Gunerussen's "Don't Leave the Lights On" installation: northern lights meets Ikea in the Buttes Chaumont.
