Shakespeare & Company August Schedule

With August here, those of us remaining in Paris can take advantage of the calmer atmosphere to enjoy more civilized and leisurely evenings. Shakespeare and Company's August calendar of book and poetry readings is a pleasant pastime for Monday evenings this month. 

Last Monday author Luch Wadham read from her new auto-biography The Secret Life of France to a packet audience spilling out of the bookshop onto the street. She read passages from the book and answered a few questions as curious tourists intermingling with the Shakespeare & Co. faithful.

Tonight at 7pm, Shakespeare & Co host’s Gregor Dallas, who will be talking on ‘The Impossible Love:  Abelard and Héloise’, and reading extracts from their medieval correspondence. Dallas is the recent author of Metrostop Paris, a historical tour guide of twelve of Paris’ metro stops, exploring the history and the characters that have stalked the pavements and stairwells that we walk through today.

Shakespeare & Co is certainly a perfect setting for Dallas’ talk since the legendary love story of Abelard and Héloise, the 12th Century scholars, was played out in and around the precincts of Notre Dame.

Next  Monday (17th August) George Szirtes, will read from The New and Collected Poems and The Burning of the Books.

Then on Monday August 24th Simon Von Booy, will read from his collection of short stories Love Begins in Winter and on Monday August 31st Robert Cole, Susie Reynolds and Josh Ekroy, will read from a selection of their works of poetry and short stories.

It is without a doubt my most favorite bookshop in the world. I remember spending hours there the first time I visited Paris. I remember the company of good friends whilst there as well...
