Jazz at Caveau des Oubliettes
Stumbling into a dusty cellar, it used to be a jail, on Saturday night and I got my first taste of Caveau des Oubliettes - a great old fashioned Paris jazz venue.
It's near Metro St Michel not far from the madding crowds of rue de la huchette at 52, rue Galande. Downstairs, Django Reinhardt style gypsy jazz musicians were sweating their way through some famous numbers and the female singer attempted a spirited belly dance at one point. It's free entrance and you pay for a drink in a kind of New Orleans style cover charge. Later some horrid banlieue youths tried to start a fight as we walked back over the Pont Notre Dame. It's the first time I've experienced this but in the last two years I have seen an increase in alcohol fuelled agressivity and this is why I don't like to go out into the Latin Quarter or central Bastille on a Saturday night.........
